Do People Even Understand the Definition of Change? (Devil Is Crying)

Some people talk as if change is inherently a good thing, as if all change is good, especially when it comes to the videogames on (this site anyway). I just want to shake these people with 20,000 volts of vigor and make them understand that change by itself doesn't mean anything worth a damn. It just means something is different than before, end of story.

Let me try to explain to you what good change is. A good change makes sense. It is a logical progression tied to the immediate past. We go through thousands, billions, and infinite number of micro changes as time unfolds. As I type this, my fingers are changing positions in space and time. These changes make sense because before that, my hands were opening my laptop, and my body was waking my ass up.

Now these aren't necessarily "good" changes, these are just changes in the real world. In the real world, no change is in and of itself good or bad, they merely are . Every change in the real world has a logical basis, a physiological reason for happening. This is why it is impossible for change in the world to not make sense on a fundamental level, we may not understand why something is happening (gravity for example, or dark energy), but by its very nature, the universe in which we exist must make sense because it is everything, it can't not be.

This contrasts fully against the context of a video game world in which human beings have complete control. A good video game world mimics reality in the sense that things make sense. There is always a reason for things happening. There are consequences to actions, and there is a consistency in the rules of the world.

Now let me explain to you bad change. The DmC reboot/prequel/thing is a textbook example. Outside of all context, the game is fine. I have no beef with it. Its not really my thing, the dialogue is a little less than cerebral for my tastes, but hey that would be fine if this were some new ip. I lie, everything capcom touches these days is lazy and shitty (fighters are an exception to an extent), but i digress

But when you tell me that this ewan mcgregor from trainspotting wannabe is supposed to be dante, the cognitive disconnect there makes my head explode. Dante might as well be space hello kitty pol pot. It makes no fucking sense. The whole world is totally changed with no respect to the context of the previous one. There is ZERO continuity. This is why it is bad, not because all change is bad, just that THIS change is bad. I literally have no better way of making you people understand, and I shouldnt need one. This shit is fucking simple as fingerpainting. If you have at least 2 braincells in your head to rub together to generate a spark, you should be able to discern the difference between good and bad change.
