I was just reading an online article from Dutch newspaper Trouw and they wrote...
"En debatten over de inhoud van het geloof zijn gelukkig de vraag naar bewijs voor het bestaan van God al ruim gepasseerd."
...and in English, edited Google Translate:
"And I'm glad debates about the content of the faith have passed over a demand for proof of the existence of God."[1]
I encounter this attitude rather often. I have heard many people say similar things. Now, that's totally reasonable if they're happy about this because they've got proper evidence and everybody is convinced about the fact that God exists. But that's certainly not the case. Atheism is growing, and there doesn't seem to be any evidence for the existence of "God".
It would also be reasonable if the existence of God was trivial for many religions. For something like Ietsism, proof for God is indeed rather irrelevant. If you're a deist and you merely suspect that there might be a "designer", then yes, asking you for proof would be a bit silly. But that's not the case! The Bible about "doubt":
Proverbs 3:5-8
Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord, and turn away from evil. It will be healing to your flesh and refreshment to your bones.
James 1:6
But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind.
Matthew 14:31
Jesus immediately reached out his hand and took hold of him, saying to him, "O you of little faith, why did you doubt?"
Romans 14:23
But whoever has doubts is condemned if he eats, because the eating is not from faith. For whatever does not proceed from faith is sin.
Acceptance of the fact that a God exists, and even knowledge of his preferences, demands and instructions, seems to be central to many big religions. Claiming otherwise is like claiming "Singularitarians" don't really care whether or when the Singularity will happen.
And if something that doesn't seem to have any rational explanation or reliable proof is central to many important ideologies - isn't it incredible reasonable and important to ask for an explanation or proof?
