Poll: Does a bad gaming community turn you off from a game?

I apologize for it now if this thread has been done before, but i wished to ask for all of your opinions on this matter.

Around two or three months ago, a friend of mine was constantly nagging me to play League of Legends, and described it as a game that "once you master it, you will love the game deeply and not want to put it down". After a while i finally decided to play the game, started the game up, finished the tutorial and continued to use the tutorial character Ash or Ashe...something like that. I start up an online game and instantly was yelled at for using such a noobish character. I tried to explain to the other players that it was my first time playing, that i barely knew what was good, what was bad, i was just trying out the game for fun. After a small argument i said to myself that no matter how good the game might be, with a community like that i will not invest the time to actually play the game. Sure you may say that's quitting but hey, to each his own.

I personally believe that there is no reason for a gaming community to be that hostile for no apparent reason. One can argue that no gaming community is good, but even after seeing the Minecraft community, the "elite" Counter Strike community, etc, i still have to say that, that experience has made me jaded of gaming communities.

So back off of personal experience, how do you guys feel about this, does gaming communities influence if you play a game or not? More specifically, does a bad gaming community cause you to either A) want to quit a game, or B) strive to do better at it.

P.S: My summary of my experience was actually over the span of multiple games, i just gave one instance that i remember, but do know there was other times.
