Does growing up in rural setting make you have better values?

I was eating lunch not ten minutes ago at my favorite restaurant in town, I finished up, cleared my table and disposed of the trash. I was on my way out when I noticed an elderly couple getting out of their vehicle. Naturally, I waited for them to come in and held the door for them since the older man had a cane. Before I slipped past and continued on, he asked me a peculiar question, seemingly out of the blue.

"Are you a farmer's boy?" He asked me. I said yes to which he replied "Good for you."

This seemingly insignificant chain of events struck me, as I was wearing street clothing, none of which would be associated with a typical "farm boy". In fact, the reason he assumed I was polite and held the door was BECAUSE I was raised in a rural environment. While it is true that on the farm you are expected to take on jobs early in your life and to hold family and societal values highly, I have met just as many polite and thoughtful people who come from urban backgrounds as I have met terrible people from rural backgrounds. So I ask you fellow Escapists, do you think whether you grow up on a farm, or in the big city has any bearing on your personal values
