Game Informer has learned that Disney is closing its LucasArts game publishing subsidiary. We received an email from a LucasArts representative confirming the news.
The official statement reads as follows:
"After evaluating our position in the games market, we've decided to shift LucasArts from an internal development to a licensing model, minimizing the company's risk while achieving a broader portfolio of quality Star Wars games. As a result of this change, we've had layoffs across the organization. We are incredibly appreciative and proud of the talented teams who have been developing our new titles."
Wow. Apparently quite a few people are getting laid off as a result. And the name Lucasarts is now a mask that will get slapped on whatever studio is working on Star Wars games.
I guess this shouldn't be a total surprise. Lucasarts has been doing a whole lot of nothing the last few years. Still, it feels like the end of an era. I guess there goes any chance of a proper KOTOR 3 or Battlefront 3.
