Poll: Is war good or bad?

No one looks forward to death, but everyone knows it's an inevitable part of life. When someone is murdered or killed, the only change that is made is getting there faster. Yet we mourn these people--our friends, family and loved ones--because we see a bit of ourselves leaving as well. They have impacted our lives, and we have equally impacted theirs. What we leave behind; our small footprint on the world, has just shrunk. I believe what most of us fear most about death is not the pain or life after, but our need to feel like we made a difference. War brings more death than any other kind of conflict, and that is why we dislike it.

Let's think about why war happens. So far wars have been fought for resources, ideology, and human's animistic nature. Are any of these bad reasons? My own father had seen friends fight over a measly gristle of meat, and nature itself demands that animals must contend with each other to survive. It's "The Circle of Life." It's Darwinism in it's purist form--the best survives. The best ideology and the best fighters will almost always come out on top. Isn't it just one way that human society improves as a whole? No one thinks themselves a villain. That's why going into war usually starts with a lot negotiations. However, if a compromise does not exist, something has to be done--and that something usually involves a bullet.

On the opposite side of the spectrum, I feel that no sane person would ever say they like war. The fact that we even have war is a sign of impurity. Society agrees that a mother should never have to see her children buried. Everyone looks forward to the end of all the conflict: to see the sun after a long storm passes. When we read a book we expect an ending like this: Harry Potter defeats Voldemort, and Frodo dropa the ring into Mount Doom, bringing peace to Middle Earth. As humans beings we demand that the hero must defeat the evil that brings conflict into the world. Then when such peace arrives, society has bettered itself. "The true object of war is peace."--Sun Tzu

Finally, what we must realize as equals on this small rock, careening through the void of space, is that peace is impossible because conflict will always be apart of life. The only true way to achieve an end is for the destruction of all life. Not just humans, but all other life forms. So in a way, wanting the end of war is wanting for the destruction of life. Yet everything we do is as a society is to reach this. Will we destroy ourselves? Long after we escape the confines of mother earth and traverse the galaxy, what will be the end: our closing chapter? Is it peace that will finally kill us?
Death is an inevitable result of life, so it's inevitable that the universe must give way to this rule too. But death is an inevitable result of life, and the universe was created once.
