Todd Akin, a Missouri GOP representative who is running for Senate against incumbent Democrat Claire McCaskill, is a full-fledged wingnut who opposes abortion under all circumstances, including rape. When pressed on this issue, he claimed that women "rarely" get pregnant from "legitimate rape:"
"It seems to me, from what I understand from doctors, that's really rare," Akin said, referring to conception following a rape. "If it's a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down. But let's assume that maybe that didn't work or something, I think there should be some punishment, but the punishment ought to be of the rapist, and not attacking the child."
Actually, according to a 1996 study, about 32,000 pregnancies a year are the result of rape. But remember, the notion of the GOP waging a war on women is just liberal hooey.
