Should Gay Marriages Be Legalized?

What you're thinking right now: "Is Caramel serious? Dude of course it should be, are you homophobic? *insert reasonable points*"

I already believe that everyone from straight, gays, transgender, ect. have a right to marry. Telling someone they cannot be with another is pretty wrong (unless it's a child and an adult then we'll need have a look into that). However, is gay marriage really important to the point we need to legalize it? If you love someone, I do not think you need to 'marry' them to have them.

There are plenty of couples, that never got married and yet had families. I've known guys who've moved in with their girlfriends and some elderly folk that never got married but stayed together who have grandchildren. If that's the case, if society is giving homosexuals to many problems with marriages then I don't think it should wear down the couple. They should stay together, regardless if married or not.

See, this is why I also don't think marriage is important - besides the benefits, finances, and religious standpoints, marriage is a tradition. You and your lover wear a ring, have a wedding, make an oath, and some laws come into place with a contract I believe. Despite that I would want to marry my significant other because of the fact I want that connection to be husband and wife.. if society was so unfair then I wouldn't bother with marriage and just treat my girlfriend like a wife, have a family, and live our lives even if we have to pay a few extra bills. Heck I would even buy the rings just to say they're promise rings, just as powerful as wedding rings (well depends on how trustworthy and devoted you two are).

I'm not telling gays and lesbians that they cannot fight for what's right - more power to them for wanting marriages too - but.. marriages again, are optional and aren't as huge as people make them out to be. I for one, would want that too for my relationship but to go so far in trying to legalize it seems sort of "if you REALLY want the title of husband and wife/husband" rather then anything else. I'm sure that people will still get on me, but I wanted to know what everyone else has to say instead of just asking without giving my opinion on the matter.

NOTE: Also I am unsure if this should go in the R & P forums. I pondered about it, but this question deals more about if marriage is that important towards people, not about gay marriages being legalized. Just wanted to notify everyone about that.
