Far Too Many People Are Allowed To Vote In the US

Way back during the founding of this country the founding fathers decided that only land owners should be allowed to vote as they had an actual stake in the country. They felt that if you allowed everyone to vote that the people who had nothing would simply vote to take what the more fortunate had for themselves. Ya know what? That wasn't a bad idea! Now obviously I don't believe that only land owners should be allowed to vote today. That just isn't really reasonable. However, I do feel that we allow far too many people to vote.

First lets get one thing out of the way before we start. Voting is not a right. Voting is a privilege. Nobody has the right the vote. In fact a Supreme Court ruling in 2000 affirmed that The Constitution does not protect the right of all citizens to vote but rather the right of all qualified citizens to vote. The basis for who is qualified or not is left up to the individual states.

The majority of states now require photo IDs to vote. In most, if not all, of those states that require an ID people are allowed to acquire them for no cost. Hell a large number of those states even provide transportation for people to go and get the IDs for free. If you are too lazy to go and get a free photo ID then you have effectively given up your voting privileges. This isn't a bad thing. If you can't be bothered to take the time to get a photo ID then everyone is probably better off that you aren't taking part in determining the leaders of the free world.

In Massachusetts they are now trying to allow high school students the right to vote and spending tax payer dollars on a voter registration drive for welfare recipients. They are spending tax payer money in mailing welfare recipients their voter registration materials. Gee, I wonder who welfare recipients will vote for? This is insane. Massachusetts Conservatives are having their tax dollars taken so that the left can spend them on getting welfare recipients out to vote. The right is having their votes suppressed and diluted through these types of actions.

What I personally would like to see is people on the public dole kept from voting at all. These people have a massive conflict of interest. Obviously they are going to vote for the party of big government. If you aren't contributing anything to this country and suckling at the government's teet then you shouldn't have a say in selecting our elected officials. That should be left to people who actually have a stake in the country.
