X:COM Enemy Unfun

I think I've about had it with X:COM: Enemy Unknown. Its one of the few games that I honestly cannot say I can come to any conclusion or line of reasoning that should have this game receive the praise it has for being "good".

Or, at least by anyone who tried playing the game beyond the pathetically easy "Easy" and "Normal" difficulties. The game goes from "stupidly easy and boring to" to "Welcome to Classic, where the rules are made up on the spot, strategy and tactics mean nothing and your fate is decided by an RNG which hates you, has a drinking problem and that you have no control over".

Even watching Let's Plays and strategies for the game on Classic/Impossible does nothing to get rid of this notion. It seems even the players/commentators in those videos agree that you only win if the game wants you to win. Its like a "Choose Your Own Story" book.....except someone else is making all the decisions for you, and they pick bad ones.

Nothing seems to matter. Tactics mean nothing when the outcomes they should be ensuring/working towards can't occur because of an RNG. Incredibly stupid things like panic firing on teammates (whomever thought this was a good idea should not be let near another game, ever) that just end entire campaigns 5 hours in.

After 27 freaking games being ended because of sheer BS, I'm about ready to strangle Fireaxis with my mouse cord. And I've tried looking for mods but they fall into one of two categories -
"So easy its cheating" and "I secretly hate life and want to die so I made the game so hard I could suffer instead".

I think this is only the second time I've truly regretted getting a game - at least it was a present and I didn't spend $60 on it personally.
