Allow me to give you some background: My sister is infertile, asexual and doesn't want to have children, ever.
She has had an awful unending menstrual flow ever since she started her period. There's no "time of the month", there's only "non-stop Lovecraftian horror", unless she's medicated. The medication has caused weight gain, masculization (she has a bit of facial hair now, as well as other things), possibly incontinence, and a host of other nuisances.
For the past two years, she has had vicious uterine cramping and non-stop pain. Pain in the morning, pain in the evening, pain at night, pain so damn bad she spent a whole week crying non-stop.
The medication for that gives her insane dry-eye, messes with her digestion, and makes the incontinence worse.
She's a wreck.
After TWO YEARS, we have finally concluded that her ovaries are secreting something that send her uterus into constant cramping. She has repeatedly requested that we take the whole damn thing out, and quite frankly, we're at the end of our rope, and asked a specialist about the operation.
To be clear, this is NOT female castration. This is removing the uterus, NOT the ovaries. If anything, her estrogen will finally return to normal levels if she doesn't have to take the medication any more.
So after running through a rather short list of side effects of the operation (Remember, you can never have children! Yeah, not an issue), we said "we'd like to get the operation". Finally, my sister can be pain-free, live as normal a life as possible, and we can see her smiling again. Merry Christmas to us!
...Until the diagnostician told us that her peers recommended we be put before an ethics board.
You see, my sister has a vast array of mental and physical disabilities, NONE of which have been properly diagnosed. She's bright enough, but she has process thoughts out loud, has difficulty seeing differences between objects, has a fairly short train of logic, etc, as well as half a dozen anxiety issues and physical deficiencies (one of which caused this whole debacle in the first place).
So, logically, by requesting that she have her uterus removed, which SHE HERSELF suggested, we are likely to be taking advantage of her mental state.
So, let's recap. It's been recommended that we stand trial to an ethics board, who ALWAYS rule in the "favor of the victim" (What victim? What favor?), which will likely result in her prolonged suffering due to her special needs, all because she has special needs.
I haven't been this genuinely pissed off in a while.
So, anyone want to explain how this crap works to me? Any other horror stories of this sort?
If nothing else, can I have cute cat videos? Me and my sister would appreciate it. :(
